Institutional Aims
and Learning Outcomes of MPhil and PhD Programmes
AIMS:
To enable students to develop their capabilities to a level
for pursuing studies in PhD, and to groom their independent
learning ability for continuing professional development through
acquiring the necessary skills including transferable skills,
research techniques and their application.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Graduates should be able to
- develop systematic
understanding of knowledge and a critical mind on identifying
problems or new insights in a particular
field
- demonstrate a comprehensive and an advanced
understanding of techniques for research, and develop research
skills
and methods
applicable to a particular field
- continue to advance their
knowledge and understanding, and to develop new skills to
a high level
- transfer their analytical skills to non-academic
jobs
- pursue PhD studies

Academic Development
- Students' ability to publish
(measured by the quality of their research output)
- Ability
to receive prizes and awards (measured by the quality of
the prizes)

Non-Academic Development
- Ability to progress
in a non-academic career with their professional knowledge
AIMS:
To enable students to develop their capabilities
to conduct independent research, to transfer knowledge at the
forefront of an academic discipline, with the ultimate goal of
grooming them to be academic/research leaders of tomorrow in
Hong Kong and around the world, and providing them with the experience
and discipline of research to work in their chosen industrial/commercial
fields where their training and talents can be a benefit.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Graduates should be able to
- demonstrate a systematic understanding
of advanced knowledge which is at the forefront of a particular
field
- demonstrate a thorough understanding
of research methodologies and techniques
of an advanced level
- design and implement
research project independently which is original and
pioneering in a discipline,
the quality of which is
up to the standard of peer review
- have
knowledge on how to write an effective application for research
grant
- have knowledge on the requirements
and strategy to publish in top
academic journals of a specific
field
- transfer their analytical
skills to non-academic jobs
