Course Selection Procedures

Course enrollment is scheduled for August (Sem 1) and December (Sem 2) of the academic year respectively. Students can enroll in the Graduate School compulsory courses and/or faculty/school/departmental courses in Semester 1 and/or Semester 2.
The Course Enrollment Period for Semester 2 is from December 12, 2016 to December 21, 2016. Priority though will be given to (i) part-time students as the choice of evening courses are very limited and the total number of our part-time students is small; (ii) all MPhil and 4-year PhD students who are in the last semester of their probation as they must complete all Graduate School courses and 50% of the faculty/school/departmental course requirement by the end of their probation to be eligible for confirmation of candidature; and (iii) students of the HKU-SUSTech PhD Programme. All other students will enroll in courses starting from December 14, 2016. Details of the Course Enrollment Period is as follows:

Students are allowed to do enrollment in the Student Information System (SIS) anytime during the above said period. The on-line course enrollment system can be accessed using any computers connected to the world-wide-web. Within the campus, students may make use of computers in the computer laboratories managed by the Information Technology Services. To access the system, please login to HKU Portal > Student Information System > SIS Menu > Enrollment > Enrollment Add Classes. Course enrollment is done on-line via the HKU Portal on a first-come-first-served basis. Students are advised to check if their accounts are working properly before the course enrollment period. If they encounter any technical problems, they can seek help from the ITS Service Desk (tel: 3917 0123; email: email@example.com; or click the live chat button at http://www.its.hku.hk/service-desk).
Before the Course Enrollment Period begins, there will be a Course Preview Period starting from December 8, 2016 (9:00 a.m.) to December 11, 2016. During this period, students can login to the system and preview the courses there but they are NOT able to enroll. Students may want to try out the system during the Course Preview Period so as to ensure they can use it before the actual course enrollment takes place.
It is advisable that students consult Supervisors on their course selection. Students should enroll in courses following their Departmental/Faculty requirements and the advice of their Supervisors/Departmental Research Postgraduate Committees. The SIS may approve the enrollment on first-come-first-served basis but if students have not followed the coursework requirements and there is subsequent disapproval on the part of Supervisor/Department/Faculty, students will be asked to rectify the enrollment by adding/dropping the course(s) concerned.
Students may change their course selection, if needed, during the add-drop period. New students who arrive after the Course Enrollment Period may also make use of this period to do course enrollment on-line. The on-line add-drop period is as follows:

Students who need to change their course selection and/or apply for new course(s) after the On-line Add-drop Period should submit their requests by filling in the paper form(s), "Form G2" for Graduate School courses and "Form Faculty" for Faculty/Departmental courses. The forms can be downloaded from the Graduate School homepage. Endorsement from Supervisor and Chairman of the Departmental Research Postgraduate Committee is required on the form.
The completed form(s) should reach the Graduate School Office or the student’s home Faculty Office accordingly, no later than 2 weeks after the commencement of the course(s). Requests for adding 4-week course(s) should be submitted no later than the first week of the course(s).
